Important Changes Coming to Sonia Plotnick Health Fund

For the past eleven years, the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund has been providing financial assistance to womyn in need for medical, dental, mental health, eye care, alternative and complementary treatments. The majority of the funding available for these monetary grants was obtained through your support of the Gulfport dances to benefit the Fund.

Over the past two years attendance at the dances has fallen off dramatically due to competition from other dances held in Gulfport and our neighboring communities. We have also experienced an increase in applicants requesting financial assistance. This has resulted in our having to make changes in the way we allocate the amount of funds we have available. We will now be emphasizing disease prevention as reflected in our commitment to attempt to reimburse all health screenings submitted at a rate of 100%. All other requests for assistance will continue to be evaluated as we do currently with dental services being capped at $500.

Have fun and support the Fund!

In an effort to remain financially solvent, SPHF will be sponsoring a number of smaller “fun-raisers” at venues throughout the Tampa Bay area which we hope you will attend. We will continue to hold a smaller number of “no-frills” dances at the Gulfport Casino with tickets available at the door. We will also be partnering with ASAP (Aids Service Association of Pinellas) and holding a T-Dance in October. Thanks to your support (and our ability to break even) The Gulfport Womyn’s Festival will return and coincide with the Women’s Final Four Weekend on Saturday, April 5, 2008 with even more womyn, vendors, fun and awesome entertainment!

Our first scheduled fun-raiser will be held on Sunday, September 9 th from 3pm to 8pm at Rosie’s Clam Shack located in Buccaneer Plaza at 6657 49 th Street North in Pinellas Park. Lorna Bracewell, Kym Berry, Kelly Neff and Andrea Nardello will be performing. Rosie’s features fresh New England and Florida Seafood and a full bar in a relaxed, fun and friendly atmosphere that seats 150. Rosie has graciously offered to open her restaurant specifically for us on this date so call your friends and bring a crowd to Rosie’s on September 9 th to support our womyn’s community.
